With marvelling astonishment, and concentration’s frown
He stared at dirty, mud-streaked hands, and cried ‘So this is brown’!
The colour of the substance that he’d washed from sightless eyes
Was everywhere around him! It took him by surprise!
Brown dusty winding pathways, brown sandals and brown feet,
Brown eyes, brown hands and faces, tanned by the summer heat.
There was brown upon the mountains, brown as he looked down,
In a wondrous world of colour, he loved that muddy brown!
He’d felt refreshing water and known its power to cool,
He’d often sat there begging on the edge of Siloam’s Pool.
But never could he understand what other people knew
That the colour of the water was the colour they called blue.
But when he washed the mud away, the first sight he could see
Were the splashing, dancing drops of blue in effervescency.
And when he raised his eyes to heaven to view the cloudless skies
He stared into a roof of blue with wondering, opened eyes.
With bubbling laughter, shouts of joy at each new beauty seen
He marvelled at each leaf and plant, each verdant shade of green.
His world, once dark and viewless, now stormed with colour bright
As yellow, red and purple hues, exploded on his sight.
A miracle! A taste of Heaven! Creation’s great array
Completely overwhelmed him that awesome Sabbath Day.
Then to his jealous questioners who asked ‘How can you see’?
He said ‘The man called Jesus – He did all this for me.’
He faced false accusations and his anxious parents fear,
And with sincere and truthful faith he made it very clear
That the one thing he could speak of with the utmost honesty
Was the fact that once he had been blind but now, yes, he could see.
Harsh, cold, intimidation could never make him doubt
Tho’ with insulting taunts and jeers ‘religion’ threw him out.
Then Jesus came and found him, and he said ‘Lord I believe’,
With seeing eyes he worshipped, the One he’d never leave.
It’s a rich and colourful bright world to all who led by grace
Believing, trust the Saviour, and know His love’s embrace.
His Spirit dwells within us and causes us to see
The richness of His beauty, His love, His purity.
He leads and guides us daily, He’s our life and truth and way,
He unfolds countless treasures. He enables us to say:
I know that once I too was blind but yes, now I can see.
The Son of God, my Jesus, He did all this for me.
