It was a day that divided history.
Even though it happened about 2000 years ago, people still talk about it today—some in varying levels of disbelief, while others voice an unshakable belief in what happened so long ago, believing it can still mold our very lives and spirits even today.
The problem that day centered around a Jewish carpenter who turned itinerant teacher. Even though innocent of any crime, he suffered and died an inhumane death at the hands of the Romans, to appease the demands of hateful, jealous Jewish leaders who had incited the crowds to rise up against him, so they could have him killed and his words silenced.
When his cross was raised, with Jesus nailed on it, they thought they had won and were soon gloating about it too … until noon. Hearts were gripped in wonder, fear and confusion when a spiritual darkness like no other settled over them all. A foreboding sense that something big was about to come, haunted the hearts of many who would now more frequently stare with uncertainty at the tortured body of Jesus. It was three long hours of dark terror for many as they waited.
Suddenly, the quiet was broken with the agonizing heart cry of Jesus. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” For God’s perfect holiness would not allow him to look upon His son as he was covered with the dark sin of mankind.
After crying out again, he died.
At the very moment he did, those who were in the Temple heard a strange sound coming from the Holy of Holies. Turning, they stared in wonder at the 6 inch thick veil. Fibers and dust like particles were being flung out from the top. Heavy fibers then began snapping, and leather ripping as they were breaking and being torn apart, much like a tailor would quickly rip apart fabric. The same happened to the veil but on a grander scale.
They could not believe their eyes. Some screamed in horror. Others gasped in awe as nothing now stood between them and God’s presence.
But none had time to even think what this might mean for the earth began to violently convulse. Rocks split with the intense shaking. Stone pillars and objects were falling. Structures were being shaken apart. The sound was deafening.
People screamed in fear … running … they knew not where … looking for safety … yet seeing nothing but chaos.
But this mighty act of God when Jesus died, continued with the shaking by breaking open tombs. And the long-dead bodies of many holy people were raised to life, later appearing to many people.
When the shaking stopped, the centurion and those with him, who had been overseeing the crucifixion of Jesus and experienced the earthquake and saw all that happened, they too were terrified and even exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
His resurrection three days later proved the truth of those words.
The sacrifice for sin had been made. The old Law was gone. The new age of Grace had come. God was doing a new thing. For those who accept and follow His Son, He removes their spiritual heart, which has been hardened by sin, and gives them a spiritual heart that is tender and new.
The transformation of a hardened heart being changed into one that is now like a heart of softened flesh is truly a miracle like no other, but thankfully is made possible for us by the wonder of His life changing grace.
