If people wanted to live Godly, peaceful lives, they were to obey every one of the hundreds of commandments found in the Old Testament. Hundreds of laws, and no one could completely obey them. Since disobedience was called sin, all men were sinners….
In order to be forgiven for sins, blood had to be shed. Animals were sacrificed. The Old Testament was about laws and obedience. The Mosaic Covenant was established on Mount Sanai with Moses, and included moral, civil and ceremonial aspects of life. God gave that Law to define sin and demonstrate the need for a Savior, a Perfect Redemer.
Before Jesus came to earth, it was the only choice people had. Paul wrote that ‘without the shedding of blood there was no forgiveness’ {Hebrews 9:22}.
When Jesus came to earth, the Pharisees were the ‘law police’.
They did not love. They made strict legal rules that even they could not follow.
They reduced the Mosaic covenant to a list of rules that, if followed, made one right with God. As we now know, the Mosaic covenant was temporary and only a shadow of Christ. Christ, who, as The Son of God came to cancel that covenant and fulfil the Law with His blood.
In Romans, Paul wrote extensively about the way Jesus’ law of love changed everything. “ Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law." {Romans 23:8-10). He writes that loving God and loving your neighbour replaced the ceremonial and complicated laws about behaviours and specific animal sacrifices. In our daily lives, we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Additionally, He said, ‘ Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law’.
Lately, we cannot fail to see how unloving some people are. Many Christians in some nations are being killed for their faith in Christ, and the motive of their killings is not love, it is hate. They are breaking God’s law.
