In the distance, she could see Jimmy as he threw his strong arms, plowing through the waves. He was so happy. Her strong swimmer husband had saved her many times, but he had questioned her too…..
“Are you ready for swimming lessons, my love?” he said with kindness after a few minutes.
“Honey, I’ve had to save you so many times, and I don’t want to lose you”.
In a heartfelt way, she said, again, “If I ever get brave enough, I will let you teach me, but meanwhile, I thank God you are here to save me”.
At the spiritual level, a person is saved and inherits eternal life with God.In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul explains salvation, “For it’s by God’s grace that you have been saved. You receive it through faith. It was not our plan or our effort. It is God’s gift, pure and simple. You didn’t earn it, not one of us did, so don’t go around bragging that you must have done something amazing. {The Voice}.. Like Gillian, who could not boast or brag about her swimming, because if Jimmy wasn’t there to save her, she would drown. The strong arms of Jimmy saved her. Just so, the strong, unbreakable love of God saves us from eternity in hell. God sent His Son to pay the price; to redeem us, to save and rescue us.
“For God expressed His love for the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not face everlasting destruction, but will have everlasting life”.[John 3.16 - The Voice}. Not by His works, but by His death on The Cross, the sinless, perfect Son of God, came as a man, died, and took the burden of the sins of the world on himself.
Our part in the ‘getting saved’ act is described very simply in Romans. “So if you believe deep in your heart that God raised Jesus from the pit of death and if you voice your allegiance by confessing the truth that ‘Jesus is Lord’ then you will be saved!”
{Romans 10.9 The Voice}. So, first you believe in your heart, then say or voice it, and God saves you. Salvation is available to people of all races; to the Jews and the Gentiles. No one is excluded. {Romans 1:16}.
In addition to getting saved through faith in Christ from eternal hell, we are promised The Comforter and Helper!!! It is The Holy Spirit who indwells us when we accept Christ as our Saviour. Jesus promised that He will come and help those who follow him, and He has.
So, …“Because you, too, have heard the word of truth—the good news of your salvation—and because you believed in the One who is truth, your life is marked with His seal. This is none other than the Holy Spirit, who was promised by Jesus, as the guarantee,..toward the inheritance we are to receive when He frees and rescues all who belong to Him. To God be all praise and glory!”
His promise declares that ‘In Him, you also, when you heard the word of truth, the good news of your salvation, and believed in Him, were stamped with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit, the One promised by Christ as owned and protected by God. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee [the first installment, the pledge, a foretaste] of our inheritance until the redemption of God’s own purchased possession, which are His believers, to the praise of His glory. But the Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name - in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf, He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you'. (Ephesians 1:13-14 , John 14:16,26. The Amplified}
Before He left earth to return to His heavenly home, Jesus promised that He would ask the Father to send another Helper, the Spirit of truth, who would remain constantly with His followers. He warned them that the world would not recognize the Spirit of truth, because it does not know the Spirit and is unable to receive Him. But He said to his followers, you do know the Spirit because He lives with you, and He will dwell in you.
So, this strong, enduring promise was made by Jesus to all who are saved and accept Him as Saviour. We cannot do this journey without The Holy Spirit’s help.
