He looked at the familiar faces around him, then greeted the group. “It’s good to see everyone. I’m glad this summer storm didn’t deter anyone from coming. Did you all have a good summer?”
All the smiles and happy faces answered his question. Thankful for the feeling of expectation that seemed to fill the air, he announced what all were waiting for.
“Grab your favorite seat—that is if someone else hasn’t already grabbed it first,” he added with a teasing smile. “And let’s get started!”
David surprised everyone when he turned to his wife then explained, “We all know how this lovely lady,” he said with a mischievous grin. “… has a special love for the Bible. So, I’ve asked her to introduce our new study, which she will be co-leading with me.”
Keeping her eyes locked on his face, Grace told the group, “He’s being a bit cheekier than normal tonight, isn’t he?"
While David looked down, and his face turned a little more pink than normal, the group broke out in laughter with Grace’s unexpected, “Got-cha!”
Grace was still smiling at David’s reaction when she began.
“We’re sure having fun tonight, aren’t we. Isn’t it good to be back with good friends?” Everyone happily gave a big affirmation in response.
“Like David hinted at, we’re going to be doing something very different for this study. Instead of digging into a book of the Bible, we’re going to be learning more about the Bible itself; HOW it came into being, and WHY so many Christians believe the Bible is without error, and was inspired by God himself.
Holding her open Bible up a bit, she continued, “It also better prepares us to give an answer, ‘For the hope within us’, as this invaluable book puts it. Not only that, but the knowledge can’t help but strengthen our faith and hope too, and encourage us to share that hope more with others.
“AND …,” she added with a flourish. “We’re going to have a better understanding of the book of Revelation. We’re going to enjoy discovering what God has for us, and be able to share newly gained insights about this mysterious book that will also encourage others in their faith.”
They all looked up, as the storm suddenly seemed to be right on top of them, as the rain pounded on the roof. All ignored it as she continued. Her voice softened and became more thoughtful as she shared, “I have long been intrigued by what it tells us of when Christ returns, and what it will be like.” Looking around, she asked, “Do any of you think about it too? And saw several give knowing nods.
As she thoughtfully continued, Grace slowly started bringing her hands up. “It truly awes me to think how just like that …,” she emphasized by bringing her hands together with a loud clap and a shout of, “BAMM!”
None expected the explosion of light at the same time, followed by the loudest clap of thunder many later said they had ever heard.
Everyone jumped and gasped. And someone even yelled, “Jesus!”
Nervous, relieved laughter and chatter filled the air.
Still feeling jangled, Grace gave a tentative smile, and declared, “Wow! I never knew my hands held that much power!” which started a new round of nervous chuckles and chatter.
All became quiet when she brought them all back to the moment by pointedly sharing, “Seriously. That was an amazing example of what might happen when Jesus returns, wasn’t it? Perhaps God even planned it to drive the truth of His return, deep in our hearts!
“With the help of the thunder, we’ve already had quite an introduction to our new study, so let’s wrap things up with this …
“The Bible is called many things, like, “mankind’s roadmap” … “life’s guidebook” … “God’s Word”. Whatever we choose to call it, this one-of-a-kind book helps us answer the age-old question of why we’re here. And, I want to quote what someone told me years ago about it.
“It reveals mankind’s beginning and end – and everything in between too.
“We have much to think about this week, don’t we.”
