Multiple telephone calls and loving text messages one day, and nothing the next.
“So that’s what being in love with a teenage boy was like?”I thought to myself.
I wept buckets of secret tears and decided to ignore him when he ignored me.
Harry and I met at the Christian Youth Club of our church. He seemed to make a beeline for me. “Hello Miss Fields”, he said in his fine accent. "My name is Harry True”.
His handsome face seemed etched against the background of the pale blue walls of the room. His father was well known around our town as a business success in Frozen Foods, and his mother was the sweet-faced soprano in our church choir. Harry was an only child, whereas I was the third daughter in a family of eight. I was wary of him. He had everything that we did not have, except a lot of family love.
His interest in me made me aware of my femininity, and I could hear my Father’s voice warning me against “these hot-blooded youths”. So I smiled and moved away to talk to my girlfriends.
Over the next few weeks, Harry persisted in singling me out and wore me down. So, we exchanged phone numbers and started to communicate; that was six months ago.
Sadly, he went cold last week!
No calls. No text messages, so I was very upset. My mother noticed, and so I decided to explain to my parents about Harry while we were having dinner.
“Mum,” I said, “why is Harry treating me like this? He says he really likes me. For months, we linked up, but now he’s backing away like a lobster.”
“Give him his space, Samantha, forgive him, and pray for him”, said Father in his usual wisdom. “Only fools rush in where angels fear to tread”.
Mum then said, “Men are afraid of commitment or of getting in too deep in a relationship. It scares them”.
“Isn’t that self-centeredness, mum?” I asked. I was upset and a bit angry. I decided to do what daddy said. I prayed for him and forgave him. On reflection, we all tend to be selfish and yet, we have to place a value on ourself; God’s value.
Which meant that, as Jesus said, I must choose to love my neighbor, and also chose to love myself with the love of God, as His Word says. {Mark 12:31}
In that way, Harry’s or anyone’s coolness towards me would not deflate me so utterly.
The Lord Jesus said that I am His and He is mine, and He lives in me*.
On a cool day, on the six months’ anniversary of ‘cool Harry’ treatment, around four p.m., our doorbell rang. Dad opened the door, and his jaw dropped. There stood Harry, clutching a bunch of white roses.
Harry said to Father, “Hello Mr. Fields. How are you?”
“Come in, Harry”, said my dad with a welcoming smile.
“May I speak to you and Mrs. Fields about Samantha?"
They spent time talking, and they said that he apologised for his selfish, hurtful behaviour towards me.
Harry and I became friends again and started dating and going to church together. Later, Harry said these words to me,“The intensity of my feelings scared me. I ran away for a while, but I never stopped thinking of you. I prayed about it, and now, here I am. Can you forgive me for being so selfish?” So, yes, I forgave Harry. I found his humility irresistible. So now he’s hot on my trail, and we are getting to know each other and each other’s families.
