Rivers and streams were created by God. He sends clean rain that fills His created river beds that stream our way.
The world’s most fertile land is found in river deltas, which are the places where a main river branches into tributaries and carries or channels water and sediment to the surrounding soil.
He fills seas and keeps the fish, whales, sharks, and ships afloat. When it rains, farmland, ecosystems. and reservoirs fill up and nourish people, plants, trees, and animals.
”There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God” {Psalm 1:3}.
As children of God, we are channels of blessings that carry His blessings to the world. We are streams that flow into dry land that are the people who do not know God. The dry land speaks of our fallen world, dry, barren, and hopeless like a waterless desert. As Christians, we are a flourishing terrain that should and will attract those who are thirsty; the ones who are lost and thirsty for His Living Water.
Thriving happens in communities when they are close to a clean river. A clean river does not harbor toxic sewage and foul waste. A source of water that can be made accessible to village homes so that women don’t have to walk miles to get it, is invaluable and is a type of river flow created by love. Thriving happens in hearts that believe in Christ.
Jesus says “Whoever believes in me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7: 38-39}, and He also promised that “ Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water, springing up to eternal life” {John 4: 14}. By the power of The Holy Spirit, those who delight in God’s law, thrive like trees planted near rivers, As David says “He shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water and whatsoever he does will prosper” {Psalm 1:3}.
So, as Christians, are we extruding the living waters of God’s presence where we live or are we exuding toxic sewage? Our world is parched, unless and until God’s people become living rivers of clean healing waters; His patches of green; loving and flowing into their brown and dusty neighbourhoods. Our lives should and must be open invitations for non-believers to come to The Living River.
Many years ago, while on a mission trip to Sudan, I saw the difference that happened to the health of people in a refugee camp when World Vision dug clean wells for them.
No longer were they getting dirty contaminated water from the filthy wadi nearby.
Not only did the cholera outbreak cease but so did the frequent stomach aches. Watching native women joyfully carry clean water home from deep clean streams reminds me of Isaiah 12:3; “With joy shall you draw water from the wells of salvation”.
One day, in eternity, there will be a River, the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from The Throne of God. On either side of the river, The tree will grow. It’s called The Tree of Life. Its leaves will heal the nations! {Revelation 22: 1-3, 17}.
In verse 17, The Holy Spirit and The Bride say, “Come”; An invitation to anyone who is thirsty is to take the water of life, freely!
