Many years ago, my deceased husband was seriously ill and couldn't do anything for himself. I was working part-time and took care of him the days I was not working. Taking care of him those days and managing the house was so hard. Sometimes, lunch would be late, and he would become so angry that he would bang on the dining table or make lots of noise. I would get so upset because I didn't understand his frustration. Apparently, the snack was not enough to sustain him until lunch was ready, and he was not able to speak, so I didn't know. I was too busy dealing with the situation.
Before his illness, he was a quiet, reserved person who would process his words before he spoke. It was heartbreaking to see him in this state, unable to express his needs as he once could.
The illness had robbed him of his independence, a fact that was evident during mealtimes. He could no longer help himself to a snack when he felt hungry, a simple act he had always been able to do. Instead, he had to rely on me, and sometimes I was occupied with managing the household.
Looking back, I see how the Lord directed my attention to letting go of the situation so He could take control. Once I let go of the situation, God took over, and I was able to be patient, demonstrate God's love, and be there for him when he needed me.
The scripture that highlighted my journey through his sickness was Matthew 7:12 (NKJV): "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."
