They question Him relentlessly. Staring at His every movement, especially on Sabbaths.
He doesn’t care. He heals anyway.
Pharisees, Sadducees, Hellenists. They only want blood from an innocent Man.
He rebukes them with the truth anyway.
As they are laying into His precious soul, which must be hurting (it simply has to be hurting…), He looks up. He sees a woman giving her Creator two, worthless copper coins. The coins certainly could not buy the religious leaders a sandwich, not even one of them. Jesus sees His daughter, who is likely old enough to be His grandmother, and feels better. Her act of giving everything she has to her Lord causes Jesus to turn to His disciples.
“And He said, ‘Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all contributed to the offering from their surplus; but she, from her poverty, put in all that she had to live on.’” (Luke 21:3-4 NASB 2020)
The story continues as the Lord’s disciples ask Him about the mighty Temple built for Him.
Jesus’ heart is still thinking about that poor widow.
The religious leaders are openly trying to condemn Him to death, the Jews of Israel are divided on who He truly is, and His disciples themselves cannot get their act together. Everything is going wrong and has been since Moses.
Yet, Jesus sees the widow putting her two cents into the treasury. I am willing to bet He still smiles when He thinks about her.
After hearing His disciples mention the beauty of the structure, Jesus unloads. He yelled, “Not a one of these stones that creates this magnificent building, not even a one will remain because of how you treated your God when He came to you. I have been good to you, oh Israel, for generations upon generations. And you treat Me like a criminal?” (Paraphrased and emphasis added)
There is so much going awry with the people of this blessed nation. They have been captured multiple times, denied their God publicly, worshipped demons as false gods many, many times…nothing is going right…
Nothing, except for the widow and her two cents.
I am also poor.
Everything I need is right here, right in my beautiful home. I get to sit on a comfortable couch while I study my King more in-depth. There’s food in the refrigerator. My city is ranked in the world’s top five best places for water. I have everything.
But…the only reason I have anything is because my God gave it to me. I was once that widow. I gave my two cents, and He made it a hundred. I gave out of my hundred, and He made it a thousand. Soon enough, I came to where I am today; happy and abundantly blessed.
Jesus sees you. Trust me: if He sees me, He sees you. He knows exactly what you need. If all you have is a worn-out coat, keep in mind that there’s a person in this world who would love that coat. Your Father would be so happy to see you give it to someone else.
He always gives back to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
Not only did Jesus see that widow, but He also saw the end. Just after the widow leaves and His disciples mention the glory of the Temple, Jesus tells them that He will be returning. All us widows, blind, deaf, demon possessed…poor people who believe in Him…He will personally come back to take us Home.
No, His return won’t be good for most people. But it will be good for me (I gave my two cents).
