It is sad to know, but according to the ‘Society of Human Rights’ says that up to 80% of all persecution is against people who follow Christ...
and persecution of Jews or anti-semitism is a recurring phenomena in many countries.
Why do people persecute people who are different or have different belief systems to themselves? If we have free will, surely we are free to choose.
In Jesus’s day, he was persecuted by Jews and Romans. The Pharisees and the Scribes hated him because he did not follow their laws. He mixed with common people, he helped the poor and the hungry, he healed the sick, and ate with the wrong crowd. Jesus pointed out the evil and hypocrisy in society and was hated by those in authority. A friend was paid to betray him. He was severely and cruelly tortured, then crucified, yet He forgave them. He Is our example of how to deal with those who persecute us.

In Jerusalem, there was a great deal of persecution against the church. Christians were imprisoned for their faith. Originally Saul was paid to persecute Christians. He made havoc of Christian property until Jesus appeared to him. He was changed overnight and became Paul.
His focus changed and his life was dedicated thereafter to reaching the lost and ministering to Christians. He became a passionate follower of Christ. He was severely persecuted, beaten, stoned and imprisoned.
He also lived with demonic torment that he called a thorn in the flesh. Despite praying for deliverance he remained bound. God did not take it away; yet Paul stayed true to God. Paul called this attack of Satan a gift, because the attack pushed him to his knees and kept him humble.

Why are we persecuted and how do we deal with it?
The answer lies in God’s words to Paul; “My grace is sufficient for you. My strength is made perfect in your weakness” or “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” God’s strength is made perfect in weakness because He delights in taking situations where human strength is lacking to demonstrate the greatness of His power”.
