I know of a young man named William who would have been murdered or sentenced to life in prison if it were not for the mercy of God.
He was walking the young lady home from school carrying her books. After he dropped her at her house, he walked back to his home, where five young men in his neighborhood waited for him. Those were the ones who bullied him from time to time. But this time, jealousy caused them to wait for him.
They surrounded him. They shoved him into the dirt. One sneered, "You windy Kentuckian, why are you walking with that girl?"
Another taunted, "Yeah, we don't want you walking with her, you dirty, Kentucky squab."
At the insult, he jumped and charged, his fist swinging wildly. But five were too many. The bullies wrestled with him until they had his arms pinned. Then, while four boys held him helpless, one boy took a rock in his fist and pounded him in the face until he sagged almost senselessly. The young man pleaded with them, and being near unconscious, they agreed to let him go. But first, they threw him down, scraped his face on the hard dirt road, and then kicked him a few times before they left him, perhaps to die. But God, rich in mercy, gave him the strength to rise.
He got up and walked straight home, took his dad's rifle, filled it with 16 bullets, and took a shortcut to the road where he knew the boys would pass. He hid beside the road and waited. Soon, he heard their voices. Stepping out from behind the bushes, he barred their path with his rifle leveled and its hammer cocked.
He said calmly, "Which one of you wants to die first, so you won't have to see the others die?"
The five boys turned pale and squealed in terror and disbelief.
William said, "Don't whine, cause you're all going to die, one by one," pointing his gun barrel at the boy who smashed him repeatedly with a rock.
He pulled the trigger, "Click," the bullet didn't fire. He jerked back the bolt and forced another shell into the chamber. Click, it misfired, too. By then, the boys were running, jumping behind trees, and diving into the ditch, trying to escape his sight as fast as they could.
William was determined to kill them. He kept pumping shells into the chamber and pulling the trigger as fast as he could work the action, click, click, click, but every shell misfired.
The boys were long gone. Scattered on the ground beside William laid 16 bullets. He picked them up, blew the dirt off them, and put them back in the gun. Then he aimed his rifle at a tree and started pulling the trigger. This time, every shell fired, slamming into the truck and sending bark flying in every direction.
He stood in the middle of the road, seething with anger. Then suddenly, he laughed a hard, idiotic laugh from the depth of his frustration. He laughed so hard that tears ran down his swollen cheeks.
That year, after the summer, William never went back to school.
What a merciful God! It was the mercy of God that saved William from killing those boys. That was his last bullying. He never saw those boys again in the neighborhood.
William became a Christian and eventually a minister of the gospel, telling others of the mercy of God.
