After the sermon, the congregation began singing, 'O Why Not Tonight?'
O do not let the word depart,
And close thine eyes against the light;
Poor sinner, harden not your heart;
Be saved, O tonight.
O why not tonight?
O why not tonight?
Wilt thou be saved?
Then why not tonight?
As the congregation continued to sing softly, the preacher started to pray. People were going to the altar, and at the end of his prayer, he said, "Won't you come too, sinner friend?"
He left the pulpit and walked down into the congregation to a young sister about seventeen or eighteen years old.
He told her, "Sister, I believe God is calling you tonight."
She replied, "Looky here Reverend, I know when God is calling." Her words reflected her conviction.
He said, "All right sister, I've just done all I could say."
She was a beautiful young woman and one of the deacons' daughters. She was known as a Christian in the church, but behind all the dressing up as a Christian, she was not a Christian. She was doing her own thing and was misleading her parents and the congregation, especially the young people. Beneath that show, she had a deceptive spirit.
The minister was returning to the pulpit when he felt a pull towards her. He turned to her and said, "Now, young lady, I believe…"
She insulted him, "Reverend if I want somebody to talk to me like that. I'll get somebody that's got some sense. Not you!"
"Very well. I've done all I can do."
After the service, he went outside the building and stood at the door, where she was standing nearby. He thought, "A beautiful young lady and it looks as if roses are blooming around the door."
The preacher will always remember how the wind was blowing and the moonlight. He said she looked almost like an angel standing there.
When she saw him, she approached him and said, "Reverend, you embarrassed me in that church tonight. I'll never forget that."
He said, "yes, I know you'll never forget it. you won't forget it."
It was about three or four years later. The preacher was walking through the city, and a young lady passed him with her skirt hanging inappropriately. He looked at the young lady and recognized her. He thought, "That can't be that girl." So, he walked behind her, and she looked back and recognized him, and waited for him.
She said, "Hello, preacher."
He said, "Well, I'll say… you're the…."
She said, "That's no more of that now."
So, he walked down with her, and she stopped by a little place and said, "Step in."
"No ma'am, thank you."
"Well, won't you step into my apartment?"
He said, "No, no, I won't. thank you. Girl, do you remember?"
"Just a minute," she said, pulling out a cigarette. " Will you have a smoke? Or you can have a drink?"
The preacher said, "Shame on you."
She said, "Wait, just a minute, I'm going to leave you, but you remember that night preacher what you told me, "God was giving me my last call."
"It's the truth," she continued, "And you have the privilege to tell it anywhere you want to. "But I'm lost forever." My heart has become so black till I could…"
What she said next was horrifying. "I could see my own mother's soul fry in hell like a pancake and laugh at it."
This story is unbelievable, but it is true.
There was a time when I, too, had my last call. I was dressing up like a Christian going to church and not right with God.
One morning, I was at the gym exercising while listening to a service on my cell phone. At the end of the preaching, the minister made an altar call. I felt the pull in my heart, so I tried to cancel the service, thinking I would continue listening to it when I got home. But the call was urgent, so I continued to listen. By then, I had stopped riding the exercise bicycle.
At that moment, I felt in my heart, "now or never." I got so scared and heeded the call, and at the altar of my heart, I surrendered to the Lord.
That’s grace. Amazing grace!
