Bartimaeus was late that morning. As the day progressed, he found himself in a predicament he had never encountered before. His late awakening meant he was behind in his daily begging routine. By the time he reached the city, the merchants had already vanished into their work, and the other beggars had dispersed, their alms collected. Left alone, he was overwhelmed by a profound sense of disappointment and isolation. Seeking solace, he perched on a solitary rock near the cobblestone highway at the north gate of Jericho, his heart heavy.
Sitting there in despair, he must have thought, "Now, I'll probably have to do without something to eat and my family tonight. I was late, all the merchants had gone by, and I won't get anything today. Oh. If I could only see, I wouldn't have to do this! But I couldn't help it; I am so tired and worn out this morning." Then he remembers the dream. He said, "If that dream could only be a reality…if I could only see again." And in his heart, hope stirred, and he longed for the dream to be a reality.
His mind began to wander back to when he was a child, and his mom used to read Bible stories telling him a prophet was to come who would heal the sick and give sight to the blind. And he began to wonder when and how that would happen. While in his imagination, he heard noise and footsteps coming towards him. He jumped to consciousness and realized a woman was standing beside him. He quickly turned to her and asked, "What is that noise?"
The young woman said, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."
"What! I heard about Him."
The realization hit Bartimaeus like a bolt of lightning. It was the prophet his mother had told him about, the one who would heal the sick and give sight to the blind. In that moment, Bartimaeus's faith overcame his fear. He cried out with a loud voice, "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy upon me!" They tried to silence him, but he shouted louder, "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me." And his unwavering faith stopped the Lord in His tracks. He called for Bartimaeus to come.
Bartimaeus dropped his beggar garment and ran to Jesus.
Jesus said to him, "What is your request?"
Blind Bartimaeus said, "That I might receive my sight."
His request was honored, and Jesus gave him back his sight.
God always honors faith. He will honor your trust in His Word; only believe.
