Brother Bill had moved from Jeffersonville to Tucson, Arizona, and had lived there for about two years when he was on his way home from a convention. He was driving by Apache Junction when his headlight, the dimmer, went off. So, on his way, trying to make it to the filling station to get it fixed, the other one went off. He happened to look behind him and saw the red light. It was a police vehicle.
The police officer stopped him and said, “You know what I stopped you for?”
He said, “Yes, sir. One of my lights is out.”
“That’s right. You know it’s a violation to do that?”
Brother Bill said, “Yes sir, but I—I—I couldn’t get to the station on time. I didn’t find any. I was trying to find one.”
The police officer asked him, “Where you from?”
“Jerusalem,” Brother Bill said.
“Where? Where…?”
Brother Bill called Tucson Jerusalem. It reminded him of Jerusalem,
so he continued, “Jerusalem. I’m…”
The police officer looked at his license and said, “You a minister?”
He said, “Yes sir I’m from Jerusalem.”
“Where is that, across the sea?”
“No, sir, it’s up on the hill here, call Tucson, you call it that, I’ve been down in Jericho, here, ministering in the valley.”
It’s a wonder the police officer didn’t give him a ticket. Instead, the officer gave him a stern look and said, “Hurry up and get it fixed, or….”
The police officer showed mercy. But far beyond the legal system, we have a God who is rich in mercy. He knows that we are human and ‘to err is human,’ so He has provided grace and mercy.
When we discover we have broken His law, we ask for forgiveness and help to overcome it.
As Christians, we should strive to obey God’s laws. It is not only for our good but also for the good of others.
