This scripture reminded me of when I was a young woman many years ago. I remember some businesspeople in the city where I lived would have a big feast every year for the poor and needy in the town. The importance of this feast was evident, as it was known for the prosperity of their businesses. I understood that they got their inspiration from the Bible. The feast was a ritual, every year at a particular time, and conducted according to their religion.
The venue for the feast was Archer Poor House, a home founded by a businessman for older adults who couldn't afford a standard senior home.
Some of the people taken to the feast were the lame, the blind, and the maimed. I believe some of them had businesses and were well off financially at one time, but due to some misfortune, they became poor and compelled to live in these homes. It makes one think about life and how it can have drastic changes.
They had plenty to eat at the feast and received a bag with some goodies inside.
I think about the Pharisees and the self-righteous who refused to come to Jesus's feast when invited. They didn't want to give up what they were doing when bidden to go and dine with the Master because they didn't believe who Jesus was. Subsequently, Jesus sent messengers to the highways and byways and invited all those who were lame, blind, and maimed, the weary, and those who had fallen from the heat and the toil of the day to come to the feast. And the messengers brought them all to the feast.
Jesus still invites the weary and the worn to come and dine with Him. His feast is an everlasting feast.
“Come and dine,” the Master calleth, “Come and dine”;
You may feast at Jesus’ table all the time;
He Who fed the multitude, turned the water into wine,
To the hungry calleth now, “Come and dine.”
