We all have heard the same preachers and the same sermons, and probably sometimes, as individuals, we have listened to other preachers or ministers. But what kind of hearers were we? The difference is how we heard and responded to what we heard. When the storm of life came and tested our faith, we realized what foundation we had built our lives on.
The one I remember now was the youngest of us, but I can’t remember her name; it was about 50 years ago. But I remember she didn’t stay on the Christian path for long. The emotional experience of the singing and the worship in the church caught her. She wanted to become a Christian but probably never repented. She reminded me of those by the wayside who heard the word of God and were excited about it, but the devil took it away before they could believe and be saved.
I think my other friend’s name was Pam. Pam and I prayed together. She had received the word with joy and gave her life to Christ. Pam was a wonderful friend, happy to serve the Lord, but life was hard. And in the time of temptation, she disappeared into the world.
Hazel was there for the long term. She was always happy to be in church; it was a part of her life. But sad to say that the cares of life choked the word, as the situations in her life caused her to doubt the word. She would still go to church, but most of the time, with a negative attitude because of her doubts. I lost contact with her, and then when I finally heard about her, she was deceased.
In reminiscence, Hazel and I had had wonderful times together. At one time, we were so happy as Christians; just being together and talking about the Lord was such a delight. Then life changed, and we drifted from each other; nevertheless, I continued in the faith.
I have blown it many times and messed up, but I would always return to the base, “Repentance.” And that kept me on track, allowing the word of God to take root in my life and grow, becoming fruitful in my Christian journey. And by His grace, I am here, working in His vineyard.
