Addressing his congregation, he sometimes tried to use gardening themes since this was a farming county.
“I have a small project and I need the help of four men with farming experience.
You will use your land for this.
Four men were chosen from the group, and so the story begins.
“The four of you grew up on a farm or worked on a farm?” he asked.
“Yes..we did.” was the response.
“So, you know a lot about planting and reaping?”
They nodded in agreement...
“My project today is about four different farming style and their production.
Now, Farmer A, B, C, and D, I am giving you free seeds to plant.
The produce is expected to be presented in six months in the local market”, he concluded.
The seeds were a gift and there are no instructions.
So, out they went with their seeds.
Farmer A placed his seeds in the pocket of his shabby trousers.
On the way home, he went to the bar, got badly drunk, and then staggered out. On the way home, he decided to walk through his field. Unfortunately, he stumbled and fell over. The seeds fell out of his shabby pocket onto the path. Immediately the hungry birds descended and feasted’ {Matthew 13:4}..
The birds represent satan. Farmer A is a picture of people who hear the Word; get the seed but
do not focus on God or live a Christian life.
Farmer B was the newest to farming and did not fully realize how rocky his soil was. He carefully placed the seeds in the ground. Weeks later, he was so happy to see the seeds sprouting up.
Sadly, however, the plot that he chose to plant on had more rocks than soil. So, ‘when the sun came up weeks later, they withered and died’.{Matthew 13:6}. The lesson he learned was to be careful where you plant your seed. The rocks hampered growth.
In real life, we need strong roots that grow deep into good soil so that we can grow and thrive. Deep soil being the Word. Farmer B represents people whose lives have rocks. Rocks are the persecutions and the many distractions that are in some people’s lives and deter their growth in Christ.
Farmer C was a methodic man. He had examined his land carefully so he knew the best areas.
He planted his seeds carefully, but, it was in a thorn-rich area. At first, his seeds grew well, but over time, thorns grew and eventually chocked his plants.
The thorns are the cares of life, such as careers, business, and riches. They take priority, and the Seed or The Word of God in your life takes second place.
Farmer D was wise and careful. He planted his seeds in good soil. His seeds produced multiple corns.
Good soil are those who hear the Word of God and live it. Months later, Farmer D was able to display his plentiful produce in the market. He also reached out to help others by sharing his harvest with those who had less than he did...
