Topic: Lamp on a Stand (Matthew 5:14-16, Mark 4:21-22, Luke 8:16-17,11:33) (01/11/24)
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NKJV). As I read this scripture, this situation at work came to mind.

Years ago, while working as a credit representative, I shared a cubicle with another representative. On the cubicle wall, I had taped a leaflet cover with the words, 'Let there be Light,' from the theme of a devotional series. I found it torn off shortly after, so I replaced it with another copy. I took the copy to work but was hesitant to replace it, so I put it in my desk drawer. The representative who worked the weekend took the copy from the drawer and taped it back on the wall.

When I saw that, I knew God was speaking to me, telling me to shine my light and not hide it by trying to play it safe.

I was overwhelmed by the darkness of gossip and strife among the staff, so I cried out to God for help. I knew that I must live what I believed in before my colleagues.

The Psalmist declared, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path," Psalm 119:105 (NKJV). I took the word of God and allowed it to be a reality in my daily walk with Him, and gradually, the atmosphere began to change in the office. There were still darkness of negativity and people to deal with that "know it all," but I was free to live my religion, and that attracted the attention of my colleagues. My light was shining in the darkness. And some acknowledged God's goodness in Christ's life in me.

So, let the light of God’s word shine through us wherever we are, and it will have positive results in the lives of others.
