As a boy, John was shy. He had few friends and avoided people all his life, yet here he was, training to be a pastor. He no longer stuttered of course and that was a blessing.
In college, the option of studying the Bible in depth stirred deeply in his heart and soul.
He was studious, excelled in all his exams, and wrote excellent essays about the Bible and its many many teachings.
Professor Herbert inspired and encouraged him to write and publish a book about the teachings of Christ.
When asked to address his fellow students, he felt sick and tried desperately to avoid doing it.
However, with the help of prayers and the Holy Spirit, he did the deed.
Socially, he avoided parties and had few friends. He hated being the center of attention..that was an added negative in his life. In prayer, he would ask God for the courage to help him.

After graduating, he needed to consider what career to choose.
“Should I teach or…?” he asked The Lord.
With daring and courage, he applied for and was accepted for a position at a local Christian High School. In his heart, he was a shy boy still. Ironically, all he wanted to do was stay alone, study, and write stories; which he did in his spare time.
“Father, I need your help. I find my students very challenging. They talk so much!” he voiced in prayer.
Still, he persisted and did his job to the best of his natural abilities with the help of The Holy Spirit.

One Sunday, Pastor approached him and asked if he would help lead some of the Bible classes.
He accepted, of course, and over time, he increased his involvement in the part-time teaching assignments such as Summer school, Awanas, and Midweek Bible studies. Surprisingly and ironically, the shy man was teaching and a leader at his church.
He knew in his heart that The Lord had more in store for him.

This verse inspired him too.
“Whatever you do, do it from the heart for the Lord and not for people. You know that you will receive an inheritance as a reward. You serve the Lord Christ.”
