Thirteen months ago, our grandson Matthew was born. It was a joyous day for our family! He was premature and began life with some disadvantages, partly due to a very difficult birth. Propelled by his determination and unfailing joy for life, we have had the privilege of sharing in his progress. An upcoming surgery can increase his success as he continues to overcome obstacles.
I cannot fathom anyone denying him life for any reason while he was waiting to be born, or that of any other child. Ending the lives of unborn children has become commonplace and expected by many in our society. Reasons vary from selfish inconvenience to rape or incest. The issue has colored our politics and legal system, and created division throughout our country.
However, such abortion is not primarily a political or legal issue. It is first and foremost a moral issue. Our morality informs our politics and legal philosophy. When reading the Scriptures, we see that each person’s life is of value.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb… My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.” (Psalm 139:13-16, ESV)
God said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you…” (Jeremiah 1:5, ESV)
We also realize that valuing the lives of children touches on many areas in our culture: child abuse and neglect, trafficking, hunger, foster care, and education, besides that of treatment of the unborn.
The real issue in all of these areas is the moral fiber of the people and systems of the world. Do people care passionately about the lives of others? Both individuals and families need avenues through which they can gain understanding and inspiration to grow in their moral strength and conviction.
Churches could be at the forefront of such efforts. The older, often under-utilized church members are viable resources. Many are yearning to be tapped, to be useful, and to use gifts they have not lost. With Bible teaching on moral character and the relevant issues of the day (in the context of sound doctrine), churches could impact communities in the painful problems of life. This happens, but with widely varying degrees of commitment and effectiveness.
Yes, our grandson has an incredible opportunity for life with an extensive support system. Let’s find ways for all of the unborn and our children to gain such opportunity.
“Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute.” (Proverbs 31:1, ESV)
