Sonya was the Senior manager of the department store. She was trying to help her staff to work together and be kind to each other. She really loved this job, but she also needed it; to pay her bills, keep a roof over her head, clothe and feed her children, but she was struggling.
Her husband of ten years had died a year ago and now she was alone, or so she felt. She missed Mike so much and no one could take his place in her life. She worked from morning till night, five day a week. Their three children Joan, James and Simone missed him so much. There were still times of weeping in their home.
She was hoping her widowed mother could move in with her, but not yet!
Her mom Irene, was reluctant to leave all her friends and her rural village home to move to a busy noisy town, but she was thinking about it. Meanwhile, Sonya did life, one day at a time.
Some people at her church were kind and reached out often. Her best friend Liz was her best support. They often prayed together.
On her way home that day, she stopped at the local supermarket. Her favorite teller was on task. She called her 'Smiling Suzy', she was soft spoken and efficient but somehow those minutes in the line with her would cheer her up. "How are you today, Sonya?" she would say and something in her heart would smile.
As she walked away, she was forced to recall the staff meeting incident. Smiling Suzy was to her a gentle messenger of joy. She knew that Suzy had cares, but she was a firm follower of Christ and it showed in her behavior.
Filled with quiet thoughts, she picked up her children from school. After supper and prayers they went to bed. She turned on the tv, but the game show on the screen upset her, so she hastily turned it off. The host was hostile to his contestants; and was a perfect example of harsh, painful and careless words, she thought.
These words of Solomon came to her mind. "But harsh and painful and careless words stir up anger." {Proverbs 15:1b}
"A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit" [Proverbs 15:4].
Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones.{Proverbs 25:15}.
As she lay in bed, these instructional words from Solomon, the wisest man in the world rotated in her mind. So moved was she, that she decided to change. "Somehow, I will, with God's help, be the manager that does not need to be harsh in order to get good results!" she said out loud to herself.
It was a vow and one day at a time, with God's help.
