As a Single parent, she ensured that her children were adequately cared for and this she did by creative means even when faced with challenges. In one instance she went to do a day’s work and took one of her daughters, a toddler at the time. The employer was upset at the sight of the toddler and told her that the child could not be present if she wanted the work.
Imogene declined the job.
This experience led her to establish herself as an independent businesswoman by taking shoes from big companies at a wholesale rate on a consignment and selling them at a profit. This was done for years, and this business allowed her to meet other business personnel who shared with her.
She is also a woman who believed in the Lord although she did not accept the Lord as Savior at that time. Every Saturday morning, she prostrated before the Lord and talked to Him.
“Dear God, help us to go in and out doing our job with pleasure and your blessing. Remember Pat who is about to take exams, my friend, Perry who is sick in the hospital. Thanks for healing my daughter who was sick and had to have an operation, now she has recovered. Thanks for food and protection…” This audible prayer aroused us and we all would go to the living room where she was and join her.
We were sent to Sunday School and this has impacted our spiritual life as a result we have accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour at an early age and we are Christians.
One year, she was unable to purchase new clothes for us and she took one of her gathered waist dresses to the dressmaker and asked her to make a dress for each of us from it. This was done and then she dyed them so during that Christmas holiday we were able to have new dresses as usual.
Apart from ensuring that we were looking pretty she baked cakes and puddings for people who were unable to pay for these delicacies at the bakery. Sometimes this kind of baking lasted two days, which she enjoyed doing.
She took an interest in our school life and ensured that we received our textbooks by sourcing secondhand textbooks so we were prepared for school. Family members who had to go to university in the city were housed freely in our small dwelling and she catered to them. From her small income she paid for operations, brought glasses, and visited friends and family members to comfort and encourage them.
She was a woman who helped others even in their illness. An elderly neighbor, whose daughter was away, needed support because she had cancer. She cared for her until her death. Her daughter was impressed with her help and invited her to visit the United States, then she sponsored her.
This caused a dramatic change in Imogene's life. Imagine, at 57 years old she embarked on a new lifestyle, working as a caregiver and this was done for 30 years. During this new season of her life, she made a commitment to the Lord. During this time she gave a helping hand once needed to us in Jamaica who was now married with children.
She has been blessed with her own home and a great family life because she has stretched her hands to the needy, influencing us and others with spiritual insights. Now at 93 years old she is cared for and, in her sound mind, still gives encouragement.
Imogene Thomas is certainly a woman who is purposeful and has been living an exemplary life as a virtuous woman and I am happy to report that she is my mother.
