Although Winston lived in the bushes of Portmore, saint Catherine, for some time, he always tried to be cautious. But, eight months ago, one early morning as he walked down the path, to do his job, he pounced upon a man sprawled across the thoroughfare looking as if he were a corpse.
As he came closer to the man he looked to his left, then to his right. Then he stooped, took the man’s hand to check his vitals, and suddenly a faint throaty whisper came:
“Help me”
Winston exclaimed, “You’re alive!”
Then he queried, “Who are you, I don’t want you to get me in any trouble.”
“I’m a Police officer and thieves robbed me of my firearm and bike, shot and beat me up last night. Look in my pocket and see my identification. Call the office for me to get help.”
Without hesitation, he followed his instructions, rolled him over, took his identification card, and ran onto the road for help.
He tried to stop cars but was unsuccessful, so on seeing a truck he went into its pathway (street) and waved frantically to stop the truck. The driver came to a halt, and he ran to him. He apologized for the action taken and then explained his plight. Using the officer’s identification card, the call was made notifying his colleagues that he had been shot and needed urgent help.
Within fifteen minutes a siren Police vehicle was on the scene. Winston directed the team to the wounded Officer. They administered first aid. Meanwhile, another officer took the Samaritan’s details and thanked him for his heroic deeds.
The victim was taken to a medical facility where he was hospitalized. Winston later made contact and learned about his progress. He felt good that the officer has a lease on life again; not knowing that he too will be recognized publicly for following instructions.
