Why the salmon ? Because I find that of all God's creatures she is the only one who faces the most trials and tribulations of life. I am sure that without God's protective care the species cannot exist today. This is the conclusion I have come to after reading her life story.
It is a picturesque story. Up in a mountain, under the shade of forest trees, the clear fresh water flows together to form a stream. It is here that a mother salmon moves the little rocks and gravel and in the soft river sand below, lays her eggs and gently covers it with sand. The eggs mature and the salmon is born. The tiny creatures learn to swim and grow in the mountains fresh waters. They spend their childhood playing and growing bigger, nourished by the food in the fresh water and the sunlight.
When they reach their teen ages, they start their journey to the ocean. Aided by the soft current of the river they swim down to the mouth of the river, the estuaries. Here she gets her first taste of salt water. She spends time here getting accustomed to the salt water and the rough ocean. She develops fins and silvery scales and matures beautifully. But life becomes challenging and risky. Among scary predators she has to fight for her life. Growing strong and courageous she survives for about seven years in the mighty ocean.
And now it is time for her to execute God's purpose for her life - " Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the sea" ( Genesis 1:22 KJV). She finds her way back to the estuary where she spent her youth. She has to encounter the transition from sea water to fresh water. Next she has to swim upstream to her birthplace. This time the river's current is against her. Predators lurk every where. As she jumps over small waterfalls eagles above are ready to snatch her with their strong claws. As she struggles over rocks, bears are waiting to catch her and eat them.
Yet she moves on because this is the life God has assigned for her. Does she resent, rebel or rebuke? I don't think so. Confidently she swims up to the river head, finds a safe place under the shade of the trees, moves away the little rocks and gravel . She builds her nest, lays her eggs and lovingly covers it with sand. Her job successfully accomplished, she lies down and calmly surrenders her life to her God. The God who had called her to that difficult life had definitely watched over her all the time. The very fact that the species still exist is proof that God cares and preserves His creation.
As a child of God, am I not more precious in His sight than a salmon ? Will He not do for me what He does for a salmon? Then, why, oh why, my soul, do you worry, wail and whimper every time you face a challenge in life that God has assigned for you?
