“Yes, I can, God! I must so I can get close to You.” Sara sighed and flipped her red hair. She was becoming more and more impatient with this conversation.
“That is not My best for you. I want you to turn and go this way,” God said directly to Sara’s heart.
“I can’t do that! I read all the self-help books, and consulted my church friends, so I know what to do. You may not, but I do!” Sara was almost defiant. How could God possibly tell her to go the way she was sure would be the hardest? It was like He was trying to purposefully send her down a long, dark road.
“I know you don’t understand, but My way is perfect. If you continue on the path you are on, you will simply hit a wall and not be able to further our relationship. You will end up walking in circles and being stuck in an endless cycle, going from one bad circumstance to another. Please, listen to Me.” It sounded to Sara like God was almost begging her to follow His directions, but she knew better.
“No, God, I simply must go the way I know is best.” Sara had made up her mind. There was no going back now.
Sara started the next chapter of her life with ease. It seemed like there were no problems around her. She completely believed she had been right about following her intuitions. She was so confident in herself that she was pulling away from God and her faith. Then, one day, the bad news started.
“I’m sorry Ma’am,” the Police Officer began. “There was a wreck, and your sister didn’t make it.”
Sara had been close to her younger sister, Amy. She couldn’t believe this was happening. How could God allow this? The next day she received more bad news.
“Sara, I have fallen in love with someone else. I want a divorce,” her husband of 12 years said. It was so matter of fact she could hardly perceive it. It was like a punch in the gut. What was going on in her life? Where was God?
She was again struck with a bad phone call. Her brother, James, who had been taking care of their mother, called to let her know he was going to put their beloved Matriarch in a long-term facility. The pillar they had counted on all their lives was nearing the end of hers.
Sara finally went to God in tears. “Where have You been? Can’t You see my life is in ruins? Why did You do this to me?”
“I have always been here, but you haven’t listened to Me. You put Me in the background and didn’t hear all I had to say. I stopped talking because you were not listening. I will never force myself on you. You have the free will to make your own decisions. I just hope you choose to follow Me.” God was silent for a moment to let His words sink into Sara’s heart.
Sara realized God was speaking the truth. She had given up on her faith and lost her way. She remembered their conversation all those months ago. How foolish she had been. Can you really argue with God and expect a different outcome?
“God, I turn to You with my whole being. I ask for Your forgiveness for trying to go my own way and not live according to Your words. I love You. I invite You to come back into my life to lead and guide me in the way I should go. Thank You for being with me in my time of need.” Sara felt a peace she had never known fill her whole body. She knew she would continue with God the rest of her days. No more walking into walls for her. Sara understood life would not be easy, but when God was with her, she could overcome anything.
