Her quiet time verse usually included.
"But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love, joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. ." {Gal 5:22-23}
Soon the other workers began to trickle in. They quickly smiled and took their places in cubicles. Telephones began to ring and the chatter of her colleagues could be heard addressing customers’ needs. The loudest voice was the boss, Hiram.
"Lucinda, now!" she heard him yell. He stood feet away and she turned to him "Yes sir." she squealed. "What can I do for you today?" she added with a smile.
"Today we audit!" he said. Stony silence filled the room. Not at all surprised, Lucinda responded quietly "All the files are ready. They are on your desk."
She did not tell him that she knew of the impending audit for some time and had worked late to get them ready. Years of working with Hiram prepared her. He was an unhappy man and it showed in the way he treated the staff. He reminded her of this verse. “A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out.” {Proverbs 25:28}
As she had hoped and prayed, the audit inspectors were pleased with her work. Lucinda was an easy-going person, and it was easy to work with a 'sour puss', but it required self-control. As a child, she had learnt from her wise mother and her loud authoritative father. Mother did not allow him to abuse her, but she kept peace in the home. Before his death, he had cried and apologized to the family for his angry years. They forgave him.
God The Father knew that in earthly life that we believers would need to have self-control. His Holy Spirit gives the gift to us, and it is our choice, using free will, to use it daily; despite the challenges that we will face at work, in church, at home, in traffic and in the supermarket. Through Him, the self in us is controllable. We are not out of control animals.
For example, countries have laws and use law-keepers [police]and lawmakers [judges and supreme courts] to maintain control. In the Kingdom of God, His Helper, The Holy Spirit in us provides the control of self, as we His children submit. So, in submitting to Hiram's auditing challenge, Lucinda kept her inner self controlled. She was not harmed or destroyed by the negative and angry force he exerted.
