Topic: POUND (07/15/21)
As a child, I remember that we often had the chore of pounding herbs and spices in a mortar and pestle. The recurrent sound of thump, thump, thump was followed by the fragrance that emitted from the fragrant spices in the mortar. It was the ancient way from Roman times. The rhythmic sounds that we made remind me of the pounding of nails into hard objects like wood or a wooden cross?

But how terrifying if that sound was of nails being pounded into human flesh. How heartrending for grieving mothers and friends to witness the ancient punishment of loved ones being nailed by the hands and feet to a cross; and then the cross being stood upright, knowing that all the bodyweight hung on tender flesh adding to the excruciating pain of a viciously tortured body by a flagellum.

In Roman times crucifixion was a form of punishment unto death. A flagellum; knotted leather strips were pieces of metal and bone that dug into and then tore out flesh during the whipping, which shredded the victim's back from the neck to the buttocks was used on Jesus. Many did not survive.

Many of those men were being punished unjustly. In the case of Jesus, he was an innocent and pure Man, the Son of God being accused of sin against Rome. Additionally not only was he betrayed by a friend named Judas, but he was deserted by all his eleven disciples. They ran in dread and terror. As He lay and had the nails pounded into him, he was already in pain from the cruel scourging.

Isaiah 53:5 says that he was 'pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed'. Piercing speaks of nails that pounded into his hands and feet. Jesus did not protest and wriggle. He suffered in silence as the pounding tore into his already torn and beaten flesh. His was supreme suffering for the greatest cause which was to redeem lost mankind and to set them free from the bondage to sin.

If the herbs and spices could cry out as they were pounded by the pestle in my mother's mortar they would, but they couldn't.

I think you meant to use the word flagellate (not flagellum). As a Christian I get your message. However, remember to proofread before final editing. Thank you for writing and keep writing.

I liked the picture if comparing the piunding if herbs to the piunding if nails. Good job.
