How can we taste and see that the Lord is good? What does that mean? Everything physical has a spiritual counterpart; therefore, we can taste with our mouth and with our spirit.
Long ago, the meaning of “taste” was “to try or examine by touch; to feel.” That meaning is obsolete and has been replaced by the current definition: “to slightly experience something.” Most generally, that designation refers to food that we put in our mouths When we think of tasting, we think of the delicious foods at a pitch-in, where we will get only tiny portions of everything. At a “tasting,” we are offered tiny bits of food or drink, usually to evaluate its merit.
Looking to the spiritual side of this word, I believe that this verse employs the archaic meaning of taste and suggests that we are to examine, feel and deeply experience the Lord, not just get a little bit of Him. If we taste Him in this manner, we will undoubtedly see that He is the only One Who is good, and we will be truly blessed and free to trust Him. Look at it like this:
Taste (deeply experience God) = see (perceive, know Him) = He is good (all good, only good) = we are blessed (divinely or supremely favored; fortunate, contented) and free to trust Him.
The above Scripture is obviously multifaceted in depth and meaning. May we be encouraged to look deeper into God’s Word and get to know Him on a deeper level. It’s all there: everything we need for life and godliness.
