Amazing grace, how sweet the song,” I softly sang while the congregation around me stood and sang their hearts out with a passion for the Lord. I, too, had a passion for worshipping God, but I didn’t have the breath. A few softly sung words would be my taste of worship for the service. After that, my breath gone, my chest aching. I mouthed the words and sang the songs in my heart.

Singing takes more breath than talking. And in September 2020, my right diaphragm became paralyzed, collapsing my right lung and stealing my song.

There was surgery available that would bring back my breath and my song. COVID delayed it until June. With the modern miracle of surgery, the procedure was minimally invasive. The surgeon tethered my paralyzed right diaphragm to the working left diaphragm. Nine days later, I’m sent home from the hospital, already praising God for my expanded breathing.

Once I’m home from the hospital, Sunday comes, and I attend service online. During worship, out of habit, I just listen to the first song. And then I realize—I may be able to sing! I tentatively and softly sing along with the worship team and last an entire song! Song after song rolls through my mouth with growing confidence and volume until finally, for the first time in nine months, I STAND and worship the Lord with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my strength, and with all my breath. For so long, I had had to settle for a taste of worship each Sunday. Now I feasted on God’s goodness in worship. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

My song was back! Like Miriam and the Israelite women crossing the Red Sea, I wanted to sing: “I will sing unto the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously the horse and rider thrown into the sea!”

And then an inner voice tells me, “This is still just a taste of worship.” The final chorus of Amazing Grace flows from my heart and out my lips “When we’ve been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun! We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.”

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

I'm glad that the character's singing voice is amazingly back. The surgery went very well and successful. The LORD's hand was upon the medical team to take care of the hero. Yes, indeed, the LORD is good and kind all the time. He does bring healing in His wings.
