On and on he went, tapping his cane on the path. The noise made sure that his neighbors and fellow walkers would know he was there. Walking along, he could hear the buzz of conversations, but he could not see them. He made a living as a beggar; for Bartimaeus was born blind! {John 9}.
When he heard about Jesus visiting his town, he made his way slowly to the noise of the crowd. He could sense that he was getting closer to the center where Jesus was.
In desperation, he yelled "Jesus" "Jesus".
Jesus turns to him; “…he spits on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “…wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So, the man went and washed, and came home seeing. His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
After that, Bartimaeus's life was forever changed. Imagine his parents’ joy! Their son was healed! However, his neighbors disapproved. Not only was he treated badly because he had been healed but because it was done on the Sabbath.
'Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.’{John 9:28–29}
Like Bartimaeus, many of us are blind. There is a veil of blindness on us, our neighbors, and our world. We deny that Jesus is the Only Way to heaven, and worship self, money, success, manmade or demonically created ‘things’; until we open our hearts and believe in Jesus and let The Holy Spirit in.
Bartimaeus knew that he was healed but his neighbors did not want to believe that. In their minds, there was a veil; they believed that it was impossible to see or believe that he was born blind and could now see. It was not part of their mindset. In the public arena of our nations, we teach children not to believe in God. That is blindness when all around us is evidence of His Creation.
Paul writes “But whenever someone turns back to the Lord, the veil is removed. The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Lord’s Spirit is, there is freedom. All of us are looking with unveiled faces at the glory of the Lord as if we were looking in a mirror. We are being transformed into that same image from one degree of glory to the next degree of glory. This comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” {2 Cor 3: 16-18].
