The trials of life can become all consuming when we focus on the problem rather than the solver of all situations. We forget that we are not in this alone. The Father sent His Son, so in reality, our problems have all been solved. We are just waiting on the manifestation. This is why it is so important to live moment by moment.
Trials are not new to Jesus. Scripture speaks of it. “Count it all joy my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2- 4 ESV)
When I think about my own trials I realize they are nothing in comparison to what all the apostles and disciples went through. They went through tremendous persecution and yet remained faithful to their cause. Following Jesus was their utmost desire.
The greatest trial of them all was the trial of Jesus Himself. He so willingly gave of himself that we might have life abundantly. He came to spare us. He loves us.
Let us look at what Jesus went through so that we can see that in perspective our trials are meager in retrospect.
“The soldiers assigned to the governor took Jesus into the governor’s palace and got the entire brigade together for some fun. They stripped and dressed him in a red toga. They plaited a crown from branches of a thorn bush and set it on His head. They put a stick in His right hand for a scepter. Then they knelt before Him in mocking reverence: “Bravo, King of the Jews!” “Bravo!” Then they spit on Him and hit Him on the head with the stick. When they had had their fun, they took off the toga and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they proceeded out to the crucifixion.” (Matthew 27:27-31 MSG)
Can you imagine how humiliating that was? Christ was being treated like a piece of dirt. He was being bullied just like kids do to other kids. These days they do it with technology too.
They continued on to Golgotha where they nailed Him to the cross. The agony of that alone should have been enough for them, but no. They continued on having their way.
‘...throwing dice for his clothes. Above his head they posted the criminal charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” (Matthew 27:35, 37 MSG)
The people walked by and then bragged and told Jesus to save Himself and rebuild the temple. They still did not understand that it wasn’t a physical building, but a spiritual renewal that He was referring to.
Our trials feel bleak and yet are real, but with Jesus on our side we have nothing to worry about. We can count the trials as joy because God is establishing new things and removing old and dusty rags from our lives.
The trail we have taken will be wonderful as God continues to lead us along the way.
