Her attention returned to the crunching sounds outside. She had a visitor. Keller pulled back the curtains to see who was coming. It was a tall man in a black coat and tweed hat. He looked important but she did not know him.
She had had no time to make herself presentable, so she just went to the door. She opened it just before he could knock.
“Hello, Mrs. Thomas. My name is George Lightly. I would like to speak with you about something urgent. I tried to call but your phone has been disconnected. I presume you received my letters also but have not replied.” His gaze was steady. He was the type of man people did not like.
Keller opened the door further and gestured with her slim brown arm for him to come inside.
He removed his hat and took a seat in Mack’s old, cracked leather recliner. Keller started to say something like, “Hey, don’t sit there” but thought it best she kept her mouth shut. This man was here on business and she had been ignoring him.
“Mr. Lightly, you said I had been ignoring you. You were correct. I have no desire to enter into what you presented. Our story is not for sale.” Keller said this to the man as she took her own seat opposite him on the sofa.
“I had a feeling you would say that, but the world needs to hear what happened. You survived. You have a testimony. People want to know. We will pay you so much money for your story that you can get that long dirt road out there paved and get this house fixed. Did you know that road out there is so bad that cars cannot even drive up it? I had to walk two miles just to get here.” Mr. Lightly held up his foot to show Keller his dusty shoes from having to walk on the road.
“Mr. Lightly, I will not share what happened with you so you can take it and exaggerate it. My God did something powerful that night, but I know how you movie people are; you will change it and dramatize it so that His miracle isn’t even revealed. You will turn it into fantasy.” Keller was getting ready to stand up and ask him to leave when he reached out his hand and touched her. No one had touched her since that night. She jerked.
“I’m sorry.” Mr. Lightly removed his hand from Keller’s arm. He should have known better he thought to himself.
He continued, “I know what you must think of me but rest assured, I will not change what happened here. We will make your movie for other people that believe like you do. You will be their hero.”
“Mr. Lightly, do you believe in God?” Keller looked him square in the eyes searching for the answer she already knew.
“No ma’am. I don’t. Why does that matter? I have been making movies for over thirty years. I have made movies that won awards. This one will too if you let me do it.” He seemed so sure of himself.
“Why would I trust you to make a movie when you don’t believe yourself? You will never understand it until you know Jesus. I am not the hero. He is. All you know is what little bit you read in the newspaper. Please leave Mr. Lightly.” Keller stood and motioned to the door for him to leave.
As he left, he said, “People are used to being lied to, Mrs. Thomas. I will take what happened here and turn it into something so fantastic that every theater in America will sell out every day. You can’t stop me.”
She knew he was telling the truth but chuckled knowing he had to walk two miles back to his car on that long rocky road. Mack would have laughed.
