Anna and James were college friends. James was a Christian and Anna was...well, she wasn't sure. She loved drawing and painted sceneries of nature, but she was conflicted. Her father was a renowned philosopher and had taught her that the world was billions of years old and that the earth and nature were still evolving. The theory seemed so hard for her to take in. It was senseless almost!
“Someone had to be in control daddy!” she often said to dad.
“A smashed glass does not pull itself together and reform as a ‘something else’? How did a frog decide to change? Where is its great brain?”
Thoughts kept her awake some nights until she met and befriended James at the Book Club.
What drew her attention to him was the occasion that he openly argued with Professor Gilcrest.
“There is a God! He is in control and has created all things.”
Professor openly laughed at him and so did some of the students. Thankfully some did not. Out of that class, a small group of Christians started meeting. They called themselves The Faith Group. At times they met at Chick Fil A to talk, pray and read the Bible together.
The group often spoke and prayed about the antagonism in the press against God and creationism. On her frequent walks in the local park, she reminded herself of Who created the beauty that she could see. She sang and prayed quietly as she gazed at the beauty around her. Her faith grew and in her meditations, she saw her Creator as a loving potter. She was the shapeless clay in His beautiful studio. Her life was being moulded by His Hands. ‘All the lives of God’s children were being moulded by Him’.
“To think that creation was intelligent enough to change and mould itself even at the genetic level is a totally false and flawed theory.” she once said to James.
“When negative things like earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis and millions of abortions happen it does challenge my faith, but what about the countless ones who are rescued?” he responded gently.
As Pastor once said, ‘not all things can be explained but even in the Bible all the events showed the hand of God. He parted seas, sent a chariot of fire, made a donkey talk, fed thousands with five loaves and three fishes and raised Christ from the dead. Just look up! Who keeps the skies, clouds, stars, moon and sun in place? We cannot, He does. It proves that He is in control of all things'.
As time progressed James and Anna’s friendship remained strong and so did their faith in the God who is Omnipotent.
“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship so that it was now full. And [Jesus] was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awakened him, and said unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:37-39)
