Even animals can show devotion to their owners. Our neighbour John had a dog named Tiger who was singularly devoted to him. In John’s later years they were inseparable; daily walks and sitting on the back porch together. When John died suddenly, Tiger would sit on his grave in the village cemetery howling. He refused food and drink with the inevitable result.
We all know of many people who we would call devoted. Their devotion to political and social causes brought about positive changes. Florence Nightingale was a devoted nurse and changed the profession for the better. Corrie Ten Boom was a Dutch Christian watchmaker who together with her family rescued and helped many Jews escape the Nazis during World War 2.
We know that most parents are devoted to their children’s wellbeing and want only good for them. In 2020, we heard of thousands of doctors and nurses’ devotion to their profession during the Covid pandemic. They worked relentlessly for long hours and in some cases gave their lives when they too became infected.
I have heard of many husbands and wives who devoted themselves to praying at the bedside of sick loved ones and in many cases were healed and their health restored.
“Pray without ceasing” comes to mind. {1 Thessalonians 5:17 NIV}.
The Lord Jesus when on earth devoted Himself totally to doing good. Luke wrote that ‘God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about ‘doing good’ and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him’ { Acts 10:38 NIV}. Jesus set an example of devotion for us to follow.
As Christians, we can find ways to devote our time to serving not only our community or church but also our world; by doing good. Maybe by volunteering or by devoting time to helping the homeless, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and reaching the lost with the message of salvation. Locally the Salvation Army has done so much. Missionaries travel thousands of miles to do this in poorer countries. Examples are Joyce Meyers’ Hand Of Hope, CBN’s Orphan’s Promise, Love A Child and Samaritan’s Purse. Thanks to the internet, media missionaries can reach the world from their living rooms.
