The accountant in an adjacent building was turning sixty-five.
So what did that have to do with me? Well, I owned a funeral home. I was asked by one of her associates to prepare a package of brochures dealing with prearranging a funeral which I was to deliver to her on her birthday.
Funeral Directors often get requests that may seem funny to the one making the request, but they make the funeral director very uncomfortable. A director works all of his career to build a reputation that says, “I take my job serious. I empathize with you.” He tries to be really careful not to do anything that would cause the public to think of him differently.
As I struggled, I asked what else was going to happen.
“Well, the owner of the cemetery was also assembling a package,” I was told.
“Anything else?” I asked.
As I listened, I realized that I was part of a community conspiracy. Lo, the life insurance man was in on it, as well as an agent selling nursing home insurance.
Certainly anyone aging has to have a memorial marker for the grave. Some of the conspirators were to make phone calls instead of delivering a pack of brochures.
As the conspiracy grew, I knew she would be busy, but not doing debits and credits.
The big question in my mind, and it was a big question, was whether she would think this would be funny or offensive. You know that not everyone ages gracefully, don’t you?
If she did not think it was funny, then my reputation could suffer a big hit.
After considering all those involved in this underground plot, I agreed to do it.
On her birthday I walked to her office. When I opened the door, I heard her exclaim, “Oh, No! You’re in on this too?”
She did take it in good spirits. I breathed a sigh of relief and had a cup of coffee and a donut before I left. This was one conspiracy that ended well.
