“God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering” were the words of Abraham to Isaac his son before he laid him on the wooden altar and proceeded to obey God in the act of killing his only son. [Genesis 22:7].
He was on his way to committing the unthinkable, but he was being obedient to God’s command. God did provide Abraham with a lamb and he did not have to kill his son.
‘Why a lamb?’ you may ask.
To God, a sacrificed lamb would be a picture of His own Son and one day in the future, He would too, have a lamb that would be His Only Begotten Son..and that would be enough!
As we read on in the Bible we encounter another lamb who was enough.
Exodus 12:5 - 13 relates the true story of the children of Israel enslaved in Egypt and being set free by Moses. Using a variety of curses, the Egyptians were eventually forced to let them go, but the Jewish people had to obey detailed commands.
‘Kill a sheep or goat without blemish and use its blood to paint doorposts and lintels of their homes’. Only the Israelites were to do this. They also had to eat all of the killed lambs and do so in haste because it was Passover. The angel of death would pass over the homes stained with blood and that day they were free to leave Egypt. The lamb’s blood was enough!
In the finale of the Bible, the Lamb was again mentioned; it is a He.
Revelation 22:22-24 tells of John’s vision and speak of the preeminence of The Lamb. This Lamb is alive and eternal, yet He was slain but is now alive forevermore.
'Why was he slain?' He was slain for the sins of the world. His ‘shed’ blood was enough.
The Light of The New Jerusalem; the city where all the saved will live safely. He has a Book in which are the names of the saved. 'The Lamb' dwells with God and from Him proceeds the Water of Life. The Lamb has a bride who John calls The Church.
The lamb who was slain is Jesus. He is slain no more. [Rev 5:9-10}
By His Blood, He redeemed the world.
.”....because you were slaughtered, and you purchased people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation and You have made them a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth."
Jesus, the Lamb of God was and is enough!
