Those were the words of the disciple, Thomas, who had been with Jesus day and night for three years. He had seen the power of Jesus heal the sick and raise the dead. But this incident goes beyond that. Thomas knew Jesus had been killed. He was dead.
The disciples whom Thomas knew so well, told Thomas that Jesus was alive, but it took more faith than he had to believe that it was true.
So what was it that convinced Thomas? It was seeing the wounds. That was it. When he saw the evidence, he was convinced. In fact, he was so convinced that he traveled to India to tell those people about Jesus, and it is reported that he was martyred there.
I can relate to Thomas. I don’t like to take the opinion of others as facts. I want to see the evidence myself.
However, Jesus had a special blessing for people like myself. He said, “ Because you have seen me, you have believed, blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29 NIV.
We cannot physically see Jesus nor see His wounds, but we can see Him working through His Holy Spirit.
Years ago a man called me, a funeral director, at 2 a.m. to tell me that he could take life no more and was going to take his life. His wife left him and he had three young daughters to raise. I told him I would be right there. I hurried the eight miles to his house trailer. The lane to his house seemed particularly long that night, and I didn’t know what I would see when I got there.
Upon arriving, he greeted me with tears. His kids were in bed. I felt like I was God’s messenger to him that night. After encouraging him and praying with him, I left knowing that I had done my best. The rest was in God’s hands.
Years later I visited the church where this man attended. He came up to me and introduced me to his three grown daughters. My thought was, God answers prayer. He is alive!
So if you are still looking for proof that Jesus rose from the grave, think about how your life has changed since receiving Christ. Think about how others that you know have changed after receiving Christ.
Christ is alive. Thomas came to know it by seeing the wounds. Others have been convinced by seeing the impact of Christ’s touch. Seeing is believing.
