‘Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. It took courage for him to take that one step.{Matthew 14:29-31].
The water sucked him in. He knew he was sinking and this was not a shallow place. Fear came swimming into him until he saw The Hand. The hand of hope who was Jesus reached down and drew him out.
Moses and Joshua both had to take a step in order to ‘walk on water’. Not only did their actions take faith but they needed courage and hope in God to keep His promise. By faith and obedience, Moses had to stretch out his staff over the Red Sea. [Exodus 14]. The sea parted and the people of God went across on dry land.
By faith Joshua’s twelve high priests obediently had to step into the River Jordan with the Ark of the Covenant ‘When the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan flowing from above shall be cut off; they shall stand in a single heap.’ {Joshua 4].
Father God has asked us to take one step.
He has hope for His children and His Creation. At present, creation is in bondage to corruption {Romans 8:20-21}.
‘For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God’
As I understand it, all of creation is subject to decay and corruption but there will be a day when that will be ‘no more’! Having the Holy Spirit is part of the process of redemption from sensuality and death forever.
Romans 8:23 says; there we will one day be the full manifestation of the Sons of God. That has not happened yet. We are not yet fully perfected.
Meanwhile, according to Romans, the Holy Spirit intercedes before God for us. He pleads on our behalf in accordance with God’s will. {Romans 8:26-27}
From corruption to adoption takes one step. It is a step of faith. Yes, if we take this one step we become sons of God.
{Romans 8:24-29}. The step is to accept Christ.
So, like Peter, Moses and Joshua, one step is the start on an incredible journey.
‘For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified’.
{Romans 8: 28-30}
He foreknew us, so we are predestined. He is the Potter moulding us. The results are children formed into the likeness of His Son.
He called us; He justified us which means that he acquitted us and made us righteous in right standing with God. One day we will be glorified; raised to a heavenly dignity. {Romans 8:30}.
That is our hope and a promise from God.
