Topic: FEATHER (08/20/20)
There are many animals that hang around our property. Yesterday I saw a wild ferret for the first time. Often I see Blue Heron, Canadian Geese, Mallard Ducks, turtles, dogs, cats and deer.

Recently I was walking along the pond behind our house and I saw a feather. Being the curious person that I am, I wondered from what animal it came.

(My wife says I am the only person she knows that stops my bike to examine road kill. Oh well, we all have our quirks.)

The size of the feather and the color led me to believe it was some sort of a duck.

Several years ago we did a really interesting activity with our family. We took a hike in a state park with a naturalist and looked for traces of animals. We found claw marks on trees, scat, feathers, bones and much more. The naturalist was able to tell us a lot about the animals and what they ate from the things that they left along the trail.

Likewise, we leave “feathers” along our trail.

A few years ago I entered a restaurant with Ken and our wives, and the hostess seated us and told us to help ourselves to the buffet. When we were seated with our food, Ken did not have any silverware. That’s when Ken dropped his feather, or should I say porcupine needle. He was so sharp with the waitress that He apologized to me. After I got to know him, I understood why he had such a short temper. His father was very demanding and it had an impact on Ken. Let’s just say Ken needs to work on his feathers.

Everywhere we go we leave feathers which tell people about us.

A friend of ours exudes love to everyone she encounters. It’s not gushy but rather very genuine. You don’t have to guess about her faith. It shows in everything she does. I strive to have those qualities, even though I miss the mark frequently. Her feathers are like soft down feathers.

Does the scripture tell us anything about what kind of feathers we should be exhibiting? In Galatians 5:22 (NIV) it says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.” You could make a pretty good headdress out of those feathers.

When people see these feathers on our trail, they have a clue as to what we are and Whose we are.

Jesus himself said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35 (NIV)

So when you are on a hike and you come across a feather, a clump of fur, or a bone, think about what kind of an animal left it and what you are leaving behind.
