On the third afternoon of their week off, they put on walking shoes and headed up that hill.
“I cannot resist it,” said Stacy. “It calls to me. Away from the hustle and bustle of London!”
It was a clear day. The skies were blue. No rain in sight. After walking and chatting for about half an hour they stopped and looked back. “Awesome,” said Bonnie. “I should have brought my camera”.
Up and up they went following the path when things suddenly changed.
It was no longer clear. Ahead and behind their vision was marred by a mist.
They could not retreat due to poor visibility. It was suddenly so cold. They started to pray. “It must go down eventually?” questioned Stacy.
It did not, so they continued walking forward slowly on what little pathway they could see; praying as they went. Suddenly out of the mist they heard the noise of bleating sheep.
“Baa. Baa.”
They stopped. Frozen in time. A voice said to them “A bit lost, girls?”
“Oh God” they cried in unison. A slightly built man appeared and in his wake came about twelve sheep. In his hand was shepherd's rod.
“Sir, can you please show us the way to Rydall Hall?”
“Follow me,” he said. He was completely calm.
They complied and followed him and his flock for about an hour. He was a quiet man and his sheep obeyed him. Soon, they emerged into a clear valley. “Look to the left,” he said kindly. “Go that way. When you get to the town, ask for directions to Rydall”.
“Thank you, Sir,” they said in unison. They silently followed his directions into the beautiful green grassy valley. A quiet clear water stream ran through it. They were never to forget that mountain adventure.
They were seriously admonished when they returned because they had gone without the permission of the group leader.
“Do you know what could have happened to you, you foolish girls” she yelled.
During the week, a walking trip was planned and they complied. Unplanned short distance walks were taken but neither Stacy nor Bonnie felt inclined to go.
Often in life people take off on impulsively dangerous trips. Career, marriage, school, business and church decisions are made without consulting or counselling. Starting to move in a direction that looks exciting may lead to trouble and could even threaten lives and safety. In many cases family members are placed at risk too; so on the mountains of life, the guidance of The Good Shepherd is vital.
Imagine what could have happened to them on that misty cloudy mountain range. They could not see to retreat or go forward. It was dangerous, but for the shepherd. John tells about Jesus who is The Good Shepherd.
John 10:11,16 - “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice,”
The shepherd that saved the young women that day looked after them. They were sheep that were not of his flock. Jesus came to save the world. He died to bring all nations to the Kingdom. On the mountains of life seek the help of The Shepherd.
