I had been smiling as I recalled a recent phone conversation. All through the day, and even through a grueling practice it had been on my mind.
Still smiling, I jogged over to my mom’s car and hopped inside.
“What are you so happy about? Was practice that good?” she asked incredulously.
I tossed my backpack inside. “No, just thinking about talking to Nate, that guy I met at youth group the other day,” I answered.
“I didn’t realize you two had exchanged numbers,” mom said, a slight concern tinging her words. She pulled out of the school parking lot and headed toward home.
“It’s no big deal, we just hit it off and we have mutual friends. Plus, we met at youth group,” I shot back.
But it was a big deal, and I knew it. I had never met a guy that “got” me so well. He, like me, wanted to go beyond the teenage veneer that so many our age hid behind, and get to deeper issues, like “who is God and what is our relationship with him?” How many teenage guys would actually want to discuss that?
I knew Nate was unique; either that or he was a really great actor, but I was pretty sure from my observations that he was authentic.
“Jenn, I really think –“
“Mom, please, don’t even start the lecture. We’re just friends, and we talk on the phone sometimes. Like I said, it’s no big deal!” I knew mom was going to jump to conclusions, like moms always do!
“Jenn, just let me say this one time, and then I promise I won’t bring it up again unless you want to discuss it. But it just worries me that you already like this kid so much and are spending so much time talking. I know from experience that sometimes guys give out signals that they don’t really mean to give out. He may just consider you a friend, no more, and I would really hate for you to get hurt. I just think you should be careful to wait and guard your heart.”
I stared out the window without responding. I knew she was right, but this felt so right too. Why wait and let him slip away if we were meant to be?
Unfortunately, I hadn’t heeded my mother’s advice. Like many youth, I had rushed into the relationship, giving my heart very quickly and never once dreaming it might not turn out as I had hoped.
How did it turn out for me? By the grace of God, it turned out beautifully, and my high school sweetheart and I had celebrated our 20th anniversary recently.
But not everyone is so blessed, and as I blinked and looked my own daughter, I decided I would pass on my mom’s wisdom.
“So what’s got you smiling so much? Was practice that good?”
