A former classmate posed that question to me at our thirty-year reunion. My answer brought a puzzled expression to her face.
You see, I answered with a totally different outlook than her definition of life.
She did get me thinking, though.
There were events that couldn’t be changed no matter how much I wanted them to be different. Parental lineage, place and time of birth, hometown, and family circumstances were all out of my control. Even the street walking Jesus lover witnesses came to me without my effort.
The only thing I could have changed were my responses to situations.
My choices were friends, schooling, love interests, activities, and … behaviors. These, I could have done differently and maybe would have had an impact upon my subsequent walks through my life.
Morally, I knew I had done wrong. Names that could be applied to me were thief, liar, wild, and more. These names ramble throughout my mind even though they were minuscule compared to the multitude of other names … young, smart, talented, pretty, nice, innocent. Funny, how the worst is remembered over the best.
I could have gone to college right after high school but chose marriage. Marriage came with a child within a year and a half. Moving with my sailor husband posed different challenges as his boat left port for weeks at a time. I could only depend on friends for advice.
The next years brought us home to jobs and schooling. Another pregnancy interrupted the ebb and flow of a career. But what a joy in the midst of job losses and new beginnings!
A series of self-employment and real estate agent led to graphic design, bridal consulting, and a flood relief worker. All of these prepared me for my current administrative position at my church which became my passion and purpose.
My life has been woven into a beautiful tapestry of God’s design. He has guided my direction without my knowledge of His plan and led me to use all of the experiences to perform my duties. He gave me opportunities I had never even dreamed about.
I am called by new names, i.e. illustrator, writer, crafter, artist, decorator, treasurer, deacon, musician, and teacher. With wisdom and understanding from my life experiences, I am a saved work in progress.
Would I change a thing? Nope.
“Everything that I am, made me who and whose I am today… perfect in Christ.” I responded.
