In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
He had no idea what was happening behind the scenes.
Some of us may feel we have also lost more than we can bear but Job’s wisdom can pull us up short. Our God is good, and watches over us wanting us to benefit from His love and protection. He knows our beginning from our end in our physical life and He promises that in ALL things He works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
Our trouble is that we want our will to be done and I remember a time when I thought God didn’t love me or He would have done what I asked. It took a while to see that He had something else in mind.
Family problems illustrated provision in an unexpected way. I had moved away and was prayerfully aware of the position. My disabled sister was upset at having to live in a care home and wanted to know why she couldn’t go home to Mum and Dad who were increasingly unable to cope. Frustration and anger filled her life and a Christ doubting family were powerless to comfort her.
Enter an even more physically handicapped lady who knew and loved the Lord and who also stayed in the residential facility. Surmounting the mental difficulties she gently led my sister to a confession of belief in Jesus Christ as her saviour. Learning to be content in all circumstances, as Paul proclaimed in his letter to the Philippians in Chapter 4 verse 11 brought a measure of peace and acceptance into June’s life.
Now it’s my turn. I was developing into a disgruntled, dissatisfied, obsessively compulsive ‘if a job’s worth doing …’ moaner. Dependant on assistance with my incapacitated, dementia suffering husband, I felt nothing was being done as well as it should be and my overly critical, displeased and unhappy attitude threatened damage to relationships. Through the years I thought I had learned to cope, but I, like others, need to remember that the Lord doesn’t give us anything to handle without giving us the ability to get on with the job and rest in Him. Consequences of obedience are not always immediately recognisable but worth the wait, so I needed to get back on track.
I read Habakkuk 3:17 – 19: Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Saviour
The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.
Yes, reminding me He called me by name. He promised He had a plan for me, and He would never give me anything beyond my capacity to bear. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4;13)
Remembering a passage from The Song of Songs, and incorporated into a song, 'My Beloved is mine and I am His. His banner over me is Love’, I make a joyful noise to the Lord, although tone-deaf, and sing to Him. I am sure He hears it in perfection!
Substitute ‘Job’s comforters’ are not needed. I rest in the wisdom God gives in His Grace and am thankful.
