We cannot!
Romans 1:18-20 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Living in England, a country once classed as Christian; a country led to prayer during World War 2 when God heard the prayers of the righteous; a country now in the throes of chaos, I am reminded of the challenge of James 1:7 speaking of a person tossed by the waves of the sea – that person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Verse 8, such a person is double minded and unstable in all they do.
Romans 1:21 -22a For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools…
There are basically two choices in life: Believe or Disbelieve.
Then come two more: Obedience or Disobedience.
People may forget and choose to follow their own self-made gods, disobeying the first commandment. Exodus 20:3. You shall have no other gods before me.
Yahweh, our Omnipotent God, does not forget. He promises to separate our sins from us as far as the East is from the West if we repent. He also promises to punish the sinners for their disobedience. There are consequences.
When we confess, repent and believe, He says, ‘I will remember their sins no more.’ From prophetic words in the Old Testament to confirmation in the New we can have assurance that God will choose not to remember.
Dare we, with careless abandon, choose to forget God’s instructions? You shall have no other gods before me. But other gods are chosen. Are they recognisable in modern society?
What of the politicians who choose to make decisions based on self-promotion, self-aggrandisement and self-will? Self is their god, to be perceived as perfect.
Sexual perversion classed as legal? Sexual selfishness is their god.
You shall not kill. Exodus 20:13
Abortion as a woman’s choice? Self-will selfishness their god. Denial of the commandment not to kill, making an unborn child a disposable inconvenience?
What god, amongst the pagan deities condones such actions? Many, unfortunately, so society has sunk to the depravity of Old Testament times.
When Jesus was questioned by scribes and Pharisees as reported in Mark’s Gospel He said, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ Mark 12:30. Then He added ‘you must love your neighbours, (others) as yourself.’
In countries where Biblical truths are forgotten or ignored we see the scourges of racism, intolerance, persecution and torture.
The choices and challenges remain. How will society respond? We are living in the End Times and the choices we make will take us into eternity.
Knowing that there is no situation where God is not in control will help in our decisions. Romans 8:28
My challenge is to ask yourself – Where do I stand? Now, or in eternity? What decisions will I make?
