He did not plan this..

If he had, it would have been done ceremoniously and according to custom.
But, who can disobey an angel?
He loved her. He was her proposed. She was untouched and pure. No one in the village believed that, but here it was, she was pregnant!
Who would have believed that they would be living a prophecy?
"Behold a Virgin shall conceive!" Isaiah said it and now they were living it. It was insane!
“How? Except that God did it!”

So he obeyed what he was told to do, yes, "he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife" {Matthew 1:24 NIV}
He chose her for himself, before all this hit them.
When the edict came they travelled to Bethlehem to register in the census, he hoped that they would get back before the big day, but that was not to be. Oh no!

Here they were in the squalor of a manger in Bethlehem. Another surprise; there was no room in the inn for them! It was almost laughable except they were so desperate because she was in labour.

"Will we ever recover from this?" he asked himself and Mary.
So, Jesus was born of Mary alone, without Joseph’s participation; however, Jesus was considered Joseph’s legal son and heir.

It was a joyous time. They were new parents and God thought they were worthy of having the Messiah to care for and then, guess what? Another surprise!

Rich kings from the east turned up laden with expensive and exotic presents that they had never seen before. “These were very special things they gave us, Mary.” Mary smiled.

Another surprise occurred when the shepherds came. They too had been sent because of angelic messengers.

Soon they had to travel again, because he was told by an angel to “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” {Matthew 2:13 NIV}.

They had to flee Bethlehem and temporarily made their home in Egypt.
