A Reflection of Mathew 14:22-32 (NIV)
After Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000 plus people, He sent the disciples ahead of Him in a boat so He could spend some time alone in prayer. There was a storm and the boat was tossed around by the sea. The wind and waves were powerful against the disciples in their boat.
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
Jesus immediately said to them, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Upon hearing this, Peter cried put, “Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water.”
Jesus simply replied, “Come.”
Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. He was so focused on Jesus that nothing else mattered. Then he began to notice the wind blowing his hair and the water crashing over his feet. He began to sink because he was more focused on the circumstances around him than on Jesus. He was slipping into the water. He knew only Jesus could save him, so he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. Jesus shook His head and said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Together as they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Many times this is how we are with God. We are focused on Him and we are courageous enough to try anything. Then distractions start to pop up or something happens in our lives, and we get our eyes off of how big our God is and turn to look at the “wind and waves” around us. Just as Jesus was right there to pick up a sinking Peter, He will always be there to pick us up when we call on Him. Choose today to ask God for help and put your focus where it needs to be; on Him. It’s never too late to ask for help.
