In 1974 as a teenager travelling to Europe to study, I remember that my father's final advice included these sage words, "Do not get a TV, it is a gateway of evil."
In defiance, I purchased one as soon as I could afford it and the world seemed to open up. I remember that the pictures were black and white, there was no colour then.

So, is TV a gateway to evil? The answer, I believe, is yes and no. Good and the bad are transmitted. It is mainly a visual entertainer. It is an excellent source of information, education and entertainment. It has been called one of the most important invention of the 20th century. A powerful influencer of cultures.

TV has given us God TV, TBN and many others that publish the Word of God to all people. God's truth is being spread. It is used to circulate information in local and global communities through churches, schools, libraries and commercial adverts. In the 1970s men like Billy Graham, Oral Roberts and others reached millions through the TV.

Until 50 years ago, that was impossible. However, since the 1990s we have electronic applications like the Internet, laptops, cellphones; Facebook, Google, Youtube, emails and mobile apps. These most powerful tools influence people and spread information.

On the negative side and with so much freedom, evil has reared his ugly head. Ugliness, sins, lies, pornography, violence and deviance spread as the devil seeks to influence and dominate the world.

You may ask "How many hours of TV do you watch? How much time do you spend on the internet?" The response is "Too many." I enjoy movies that tell stories and I do a lot of couch detecting with Sherlock Holmes. I also watch Christian ministers as they preach the Word, pray for the sick and awaken our eyes to third world needs.

Finally, in my opinion, the guidelines for viewing should be; "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." {Philippians 4:8}.

So, I thank God for TV [and other sources] that reach unsaved minds and broken hearts for Jesus. They are mission tools.

Yes, TV has great influence -for good or for evil. Thanks for sharing, and it is good to remember how God's Word is also preached through TV.

You have a quick history of the good and the bad of the TV.

As you have said each have their choice. (Actually everyone has to make the choice.)

We have to be careful that our choices do not lead someone with a weak conscience decide that all TV is good and watch what isn't good to their destruction.
