God makes many promises and looking for their fulfilment can be a tryjng exercise. Some are of a universal nature while others can be applied in a personal way.

Some favourites, besides that favourite quote from the KJV And it came to pass that …

2 Peter 3:9 It is not God’s will that any should be lost … Therefore when I pray for my straying son and his alcohol addiction it is with trust that the Lord is at work in him. He was dedicated as my eldest and knows the Truth that will prevail. It’s a lesson in persevering prayer.

From Genesis and the first promises that God gave to Abraham where we see the importance of patience, right through to fulfilment of other prophecies, some yet to be.

Proverbs 19:21 reminds us, Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. We will do well to remember that His will is paramount. Abraham’s plan of producing Ishmael was overturned when Yahweh fulfilled His promise of a son, Isaac.

We go through to the promise God made via the Angel Gabriel to Mary. That took forbearance and tenacity in her and Joseph’s understanding. Who would want to go through the scandal-mongering, the accusations, and the hurts that gossip can bring? And then to feel the enormity of what had been promised as the baby in the womb of Elizabeth leapt in welcome and acknowledgement when Mary visited her aunt. After the birth of Jesus, she would have seen the worship, the knowledge, but also the distressing prophecy of her future pain. She knew hope, trust, expectation, yet no amount of wishful thinking could erase the Truth of who her son really was and would be – Saviour of mankind. Would she willingly have chosen such a walk?

Isaiah 26:8 Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.

But while we wait for the blessed 2nd coming of our Lord Jesus Christ considering those who waited before us we have that precious promise of the fruit of our commitment. Wounded we wait for healing. Grieving we receive His Grace. Wandering, we are guided and directed. Wondering we are taught and encouraged, empowered by the Holy Spirit. What a blessed assurance that it would be worth it.

When we reach our destiny, on that day to which we have committed our all and receive the Amazing Grace of completion in Christ Jesus, we will know that the waiting is over.

Philippians 1:6 … being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
