Rolls down an old country road.
The radio ironically playing the song
“Turn Your Radio On”
My Gran is driving,
A tiny me, standing beside him.
We both know every word.
No finer duet has ever been recorded.
One of my fondest memories
Time that can’t retreat.
Experience that money can’t buy
Replays in my mind
The scratching sound of a needle
On an old vinyl 33 album
Echoes of a time long past.
Memories reminiscent of an old Country and Western song.
Sections of life with love and laughter play along in my head.
Telling signs of a smile across my face
Have me lost in a span of thought
Recapturing an era.
45’s play significant events
Loss, sadness death and hurt
Single out one hit wonders
And turn my expression into a longing look
Completely lost in my thoughts.
Feeling every pain and joy,
Over and over again
As the needle arm on the old turntable
Resets its self time and time again
An 8 track stereo plays
Merle Haggard and Don Williams
Through the speakers of an old pick up truck.
My daddy all cleaned up
Taking me into town.
The smell of his musk cologne
Permeates my current space.
A smile across his face
This has been one of his good days.
Mixed tapes of significant
People, places and experience
Cause an audible chuckle.
A treasured CD of gospel music
Stuck in the dash of my car
From the wreck that changed our direction.
Evenings spent with my husband
Listening to songs on our electronic devices.
He plays “I Never Knew Love” by Doug Stone
And “Sweet Life” by Paul Davis
To express his feeling for me and us.
Leaving me giving thanks to God,
Singing songs of praise in my heart
For blessing me with so much more than I deserve.
Priceless melodies of my memories
Treasured experiences of joy and pain
No one can take away.
