In order for humans to survive, we require air to breathe, food to eat, and water to drink. Personally I think there is one more element that if we had to be without it, we would lose our will to live. We need music. Music is such an important part of our daily lives that you can find it almost anywhere. If you walk into a grocery or department store, or even your doctor’s office, it is inevitable that some form of music is playing in the background.
I can imagine that music existed all the way back to when Adam and Eve were in the garden. Perhaps the wind blowing through the trees caused melodious sounds that Eve would try to replicate while tending to the animals. If she was given the gift of a beautiful voice as so many have been, she more than likely started making up her own songs, which were eventually passed down to her children, and her children’s children.
I love to have music playing in my car while I’m driving, and nothing gets me cleaning my house like some good old rock and roll songs from my high school days. But the music I love the best, is the kind that stirs my soul. When I hear the soft and delicate sounds that come from a harp, I feel as if I could float on a cloud. I get chills when I hear traditional bagpipes crying out with the first chords of “Amazing Grace”. The hollow sounds of a Native American flute allow me to step back in time and imagine our beautiful land before there were interstate highways and telephone poles scarring the natural beauty of our mountains and prairies.
More than likely we can all name a favorite singer or two, and the songs they sing that bring us such joy. Then there are those whose voices are their musical instrument, and some can literally break glass when they reach a certain pitch. I stand in awe of such gifts of talent.
This past Sunday morning, I heard a sound that stirred me from within. As the congregation proclaimed together in a familiar song, “How Great Thou Art”, above the grown up voices I could hear one little girl singing those beautiful words with all of her heart and soul. I smiled to myself as I imagined how pleased God must be when we praise Him in song, purely and from the heart, like a child.
Akiane Kramarik, the famous artist of the well-known ‘Jesus’ painting, claimed to have visited Heaven and actually met Jesus in the book, “Akiane: Her Life, Her Art, Her Poetry” (2012). In the book, Akiane tells her mother that the music of this world can’t compare to the music we will hear in Heaven, but when there, we will actually be able to taste music! Can you imagine?
Music, my friends, truly is food for the soul.
